About

Jessica Hallowell is a life-long reader and writer with stories that focus on the fantastical, the supernatural, and the very real and human. Her keen interest in history also tends to lead to stories that have a historical element inserted into them somewhere.

When Jessica isn’t writing (or editing) she is reading. She reads a variety of genres, which probably contributes to the genre-blending of her writing style. When she isn’t working or partaking in one of her many hobbies, she spends her time playing with her two lovely, imaginative children.

A Litany of Memory

Fans of The Poppy War and Studio Ghibli projects like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away will be drawn to this story of a war-torn world in which the mythicals from stories exist.

A post-war continent. A country in economic and political upheaval. Humans turning against mythicals.

In the country of Maugh, Elene Halithersis wants to hide and live a quiet life in penance by helping her countrymen as they face uncertainty due to inflation, food shortages, and a new government. In Plymb, she hides what she is: a night-reader, someone who receives visions of the past, present, and future while they sleep. It comes with a price, though, one Elene resents she has to pay as she finds ways around her ability.

Things are further complicated because there are people hunting her, people from the new regime that would like to acquire her power. Can Elene learn to accept who and what she is? Or will another war begin—this time between humans and mythicals?

The Masque

One night. One deal.

Years ago, Charisse and her family were betrayed and she was the only survivor. She has returned to the castle of her betrayers seeking revenge—but she only has one night to fulfill her goals.

Can Charisse race against the clock and accomplish her plan, or will the clock strike midnight and see her fall victim to the deal she made for power?

The Proteges

Madness. Creativity. Art. When the lines between the three blur will the artists lose themselves?

Two orphans who have long dreamt of fame and fortune find themselves in the patron city of art known as Artesano. Taken in by different Houses, each is trained to use their abilities to make the audience experience emotions as if for the first time: first love, hope, reconciliation, triumph. For a nation torn apart by feuding city-states, these moments are highly sought after and everyone in the city is willing to pay for the experience.

But when fame and fortune rests upon the whims of the public, can the two artists stay true to themselves or will they give in and perform for the sake of others?

The Green Hour

What would happen if one could see Death?

After a night of unusual revelry, Marcel discovers he can see Death’s approach when a person touches him. If they’re close to dying, a dark, sinister figure leers in their background, watching their every move. At first, terrified, he turns to drinking, until an ex-magician’s assistant tells him to take his show on the road across America, turning his sight into profit.

How long can they keep their scheme going? How long until Death catches up to Marcel?
